Uncut with Erik Dahlström and Astrid Steen

Jun 10, 2024

The Anti-Discrimination Agency West has 25 member organisations.
What are they working for?
In this episode of Uncut (Kolla oklippt), Erik Dahlström (ED) and Astrid Steen (AS) from Unga Rörelsehindrade Göteborgsklubben talk about their involvement.
MJ stands for Maria Jacobson, communicator at Antidiskrimineringsbyrån Väst.
The text is a transcription of the interview in the video.

MJ: Who are you?
ED: My name is Erik Dahlström.
AS: Astrid Steen
MJ: What organisation are you active in?
ED: Young Disabled Gothenburg Club.
ED: And I am the chair.
AS: And I am vice chair.
MJ: That’s the top layer then.
MJ: You are one of the member organisations of the Anti-Discrimination Agency West. What kind of issues do you work with? Erik, if you take the big issues?
ED: The biggest issue is accessibility. Everyone should be seen and heard and exist. Democracy, that you should be able to participate in the public space like anyone else.
MJ: If you take some concrete questions about accessibility, what might they be Astrid?
AS: It could be about schools, for example. It’s very important that schools are accessible, which not all schools are today. But it’s important for our members to be able to choose the school they want to go to, that they don’t have to opt out of a school because it’s inaccessible.
MJ: Any other issues that are important to young people?
AS: It could be accessibility in restaurants, cafés and clubs.
ED: We are against special solutions too. So that means we don’t accept going through the kitchen.
MJ: So not through the back door.
ED, AS: No.
AS: It happens sometimes.
ED: Yes, unfortunately it does.
MJ: How many members do you have?
ED: We have about 100 members, in Gothenburg.
AS: One thing too, we are called the Gothenburg Club but it includes all of Västra Götaland.
MJ: If you were to mention any particular issue, any topicality, something that is at the forefront of your mind in Young People with Disabilities now, what could it be?
ED: We organise member meetings, both for purely social purposes but also to discuss important issues. For example, labour market, school. We have also made some videos for our YouTube channel where we address important topics that concern our target group.
MJ: Astrid, can you say something about what they are about?
AS: Well, prejudice is one topic. Influence and camaraderie.
MJ: And they are on your YouTube channel?
AS: Yes.
ED: And you can go in and watch and subscribe.
AS: Those films are quite heavy, but we’ve also made shorter ones, too, which highlight serious topics, but in a slightly funny way. So you can watch those too.
MJ: That’s great. Thank you very much!
ED, AS: Thank you!

Kolla oklippt is a modest production. We use a mobile phone camera and the interview is done in one take.
